![]() The most common mistake is sending me a genre I don’t represent. What common mistakes do you see in query letters? Do you have any querying pet peeves? The chapters let me know if you can write. In a query I ask for a synopsis and three chapters: this tells me if the story is well balanced and interesting. Leave the hook endings for the jacket copy. If I don’t know how it ends, how can I tell if it’s worth my time to read? I want to know. I’m trying to figure out if you can write a story. Yet, we’re supposed to leave our pitches on a hook. We hear that ending a query pitch with a rhetorical question is a no-no. These are all indications that you know your stuff and are prepared to market to your readers. There are several reasons I want comps: it shows me where on the shelf this book is going to sit, how well the books in this genre sell, that you know your audience and have read the best in the genre. If you read in your genre then it shouldn’t be difficult. I think it’s best to use the closest comps as possible. Others say, specificity in comps shows that we know our work/audience. Some agents have told us that they can’t read every work published, so use of recognizable titles/authors for comps is best. If a person can write and I love the story, I’m in. Awards and previously published articles definitely help but are not required. I like to know who is writing the manuscript. How important are bios in a query? How much does it move the needle if a writer has published articles or short stories or gotten awards for previous writing? Or if they have none of those things? I’m always a fan of fun rom-coms that have a bigger hook: book club fiction. Something I can get lost in and feel all the feels. I would love to find a rich, beautifully written, emotional story, a coming of age for a woman in her 30-50s. I’d love unique characters with great stories – who doesn’t. What is on your manuscript wish list right now? In the meantime, I have my linktr.ee link on there which has all my social media, bios, a few interviews and podcasts with me. X/Twitter isn’t the best for me as I tend to be a bit lax in posting (too busy selling books!) I intend to invest more into Twitter/X soon. How, beyond your agency website, can writers get to know your specific preferences? Is X/Twitter the best medium for that? Twitter/X often hosts pitch wars as well. A good way to find an agent for your genre is to check the acknowledgements of your favorite book and see if the author thanked their agent. There are several ways to find an agent: query tracker, MSWL, Publishers Marketplace, The Writers Market. Where does one find an agent? There are so many agencies. Mindfulness continues to be the practice of surviving how my body becomes a canvas on which other people’s projections paint a reality for me that is often quite harmful. It was being aware of how people notice me in space, like walking into a store and having no choice but to be mindful of the cashiers or plainclothes security because you are already a suspect. It had been so much a part of how I have survived as a Black queer man in this world. When I started focusing more on mindfulness, I noticed that it was something I had been practicing acutely for most of my life. For me, mindfulness must first emerge from my body as it is positioned in the world, open and sensitive to the many ways it is interpreted by others, sometimes in ways that are traumatizing and wounding, and sometimes in ways that celebrate my body. When I am with other bodies sharing spaces, communing together, or making love together, then mindfulness is knowing that I am there showing up with my body and breath. It is breathing with it, hurting with it, and rejoicing with it. It has been a foundational text for me as I continue to understand meditation and what Michel Foucault called “technologies of the self”-the various means through which we may affect personal mental and physical changes to produce more happiness, contentment, wisdom, etc.Īs I practice mindfulness each day, it becomes a practice of being in my body, knowing my body, and moving with my body as it moves through the world. Though I have no formal training in sutra-based mindfulness, I have been working with the Satipatthana (Four Foundations of Mindfulness) Sutta in my personal practice. Training in the initial stages of calm abiding is essentially mindfulness training, and it is taught that without the stability derived from concentrated calm abiding practice, insight meditation would be difficult. ![]() Insight is the practice of discerning what the mind is by exploring and analyzing phenomena of mind. The 18 songs he cut at a Wisconsin session in 1931 were so powerful that tracks like the chilling “Devil Got My Woman” and “Hard Time Killin’ Floor Blues” became part of the country-blues canon.
